The Franklin House Hotel was THE hotel in Rutland, Vermont during the stage coach period. It was located next to the Rutland County Courthouse and played home away from home for visiting Judges, Lawyers, etc.
This ledger is a who's who of Vermont and rutland county government in the years just preceding the Civil War. Travelers traveling west on the trains of the mid-1850 passed through Rutland and many stayed at the old hotel. Even a young John Sargent Pillsbury stayed here in January 1855 on his trip west before going on to fame as the governor of Minnesota and co-founder of the Pilsbury Company.
Other Guests include Vermont Governors, State Congressmen and Senators, State Supreme Court Justice, Pioneers, Civil War Heros, etc. See the other Franklin House Galleries for a sampling.
